Common Tools Used by HVAC Contractors

What does it mean when an HVAC company certifies that their technicians and the trucks they use are "fully stocked"?

What tools and equipment are used regularly that homeowners might want to add to their at-home repair kits in the event of last-minute repairs or those that the homeowner can repair themselves?

Having the right tools for the job help with safety, getting the job done faster and at a higher quality.

Hand Toolstools

  • Screwdrivers: Multipurpose screwdrivers with different tips serving many functions are versatile to any tool belt. Most jobs require a flat head or Phillips head screwdriver, so multitools are handy to have.
  • Insulated pliers: Needle nose, lineman, wire strippers, and channel locks are the most frequently used.
  • Wrenches: Fixed sets in metric and standard, adjustable in 6”, 8”, 10”, and 12”, pipe, and crescent are necessary for HVAC work.
  • Metal and tubing cutters: ½" is a good starting point and increases size based on the projects' diversity.
  • Impact driver: 18V with spare batteries and assorted drill bits with a light in the unit to help in low visibility situations.

Safety Equipmentgoggles

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) protects workers from injury due to exposure to chemicals, particulates, electricity, and biohazard materials.

Pandemic has been considered added to the safety equipment carried by HVAC technicians.

  • Safety glasses: Protect eyes from airborne debris and particulate matter.
  • Face mask or respirator: Prevents inhalation of fumes, chemicals, or particulates.
  • Protective coveralls or suit: These are worn over the uniform and can be easily removed after dirty work is completed.
  • Gloves: Nitrile gloves prevent exposure to chemicals or liquids, while work gloves that are cut-resistant keep the skin of the hands safe from cuts or abrasions.
  • Disposable booties: Slip-on covers that are easily disposed of and protect the home's cleanliness.

Washing tools after use and keeping PPE in proper working order will keep both technicians and homeowners safe. HVAC companies are responsible for replacing equipment or PPE that is old or in disrepair, but technicians are duty-bound to report to their supervisor that they require new equipment.

For safety, wash hands with soap and workspaces with cleansers frequently but especially between jobs.

Specialized Tools

  • Coil Fin Straightener: One of the most common HVAC repairs is to the fins on the exterior units. Straightening tools can fix fins that have been flattened, especially on condensers that have been heavily damaged.
  • Vacuum Pump: A deep and complete vacuuming is necessary to remove any potential contaminants before recharging with refrigerant. Pumps remove gasses and vapors from the system, as well.
  • Leak Detectors: Refrigerants can absorb infrared light from leak detectors, and the detector picks up on the light, showing the technician that there is a leak and where it can be found.
