Start The New Year Right With These Heating & Cooling Tips
One of the best parts about the start of a new year is the possibility of learning new things. While for most people this includes dietary changes and gym routines, why not let that extend to picking up a few HVAC tips? HVAC professionals have gotten together to share a few, easy to apply tricks of the trade for the home. Not only can these improve the performance of your heater or air conditioner, but also it can help you save money too!
Outdoor Units Need Sun Coverage Too

This can be accomplished by building a specific shading structure, or by planning ahead and planting trees. In addition, shade trees can also reduce the amount of air conditioning needed by a home. This helps save money in two different ways.
Outdoor HVAC units that are shaded also operate much more efficiently. This is due to the fact that it takes less energy to cool them down so that they can provide the home with cooler air. If homeowners are planning to install a new unit, another of the outdoor HVAC tips is to locate it on the north side of the home. This side of the home stays the coolest throughout the day.
Keep That Air Flowing
Another common set of HVAC tips includes keeping ventilation around the home and the air vents clean and free of debris. This can be done in a variety of ways and are easy even for homeowners with no experience.
Start by turning off the power to the HVAC unit, which will stop it from turning on mid-cleaning. This also stops the system from continuing to blow dust during the cleaning process.

The next step is to use a screwdriver to remove the vent covers. Homeowners will then use a vacuum cleaner to vacuum the covers and remove all of the dirt and debris. Once that is complete, wash them down with soapy water. Allow the vent covers to dry before replacing them.
Finally, use the vacuum again to clean out the air duct itself. It may be beneficial to rent a heavy-duty machine for this purpose, as it has more suction power and a longer hose to reach further. People who are extra sensitive to dust or have allergies should consider wearing a mask.
Don’t Neglect the AC Drainage Line

Cleaning the drain opening only takes a few seconds. Homeowners can simply pour a single cup of bleach directly into the opening. However, in the colder months or in homes with PVC or copper piping, substitute a cup of distilled white vinegar. This is also easier on the entire HVAC system.
If a clog is suspected, call an HVAC professional instead of attempting to clean it.
